 _Haven House is a faith-based organization providing supported and structured living opportunities to foster healing and self-sufficiency for women coming out of prison._

 {quote}"Women released from prison need help. To successfully mainstream into society, women need a safe haven where they can focus on healing their lives.... begin to change their lifestyle... address the drug and alcohol abuse that initially sent them into prison. The safe haven we hope to construct will address those issues while providing safe shelter." -- Ellen Campbell, prison volunteer for thirty years{quote}

  Each story of a woman transitioning out of prison is different, but incarceration is a clue that each one was already failing to cope with life's challenges. On release from prison their situation is more dire as they face the familiar demons - inadequate skills, substance abuse, unrealistic expectations, abusive relationships, poor self esteem. In addition, they are now stigmatized as criminals, farther behind economically, and less competitive in job markets. Upon release, many return to their past associations and behaviors and the cycle begins again.

 {quote}"Melissa attended the women's bible study in prison, and continued to attend another prayer group after being released to a halfway house. She was sober during this time. Upon release, she refused a ride to a local shelter and arranged to be picked up by her boyfriend who had a bottle waiting for her. She slipped back into her old life." -- Ellen Campbell{quote}

 Women are particularly vulnerable. In our society they still have less earning power and dependent children often complicate their financial situation and job prospects. They are usually the more vulnerable party in exploitive relationships. And finally, their pain may somehow be easier to ignore. We respond to desperate children with sympathy, to desperate men with fear, but perhaps we respond to desperate women by averting our eyes.

 Too little has been done for too long to help ex offenders break the cycle. The result is more spending on courts, police and prisons, with little decrease in crime, and extraordinary costs in lost human potential.

 Haven House offers an opportunity for some of these women to help themselves. For women who earnestly desire change the program will include supported and structured living, with shelter for up to a year, in community, with counseling and/or substance abuse treatment, life skills training and employment coaching. To foster self-sufficiency the women will share in the chores and responsibilities of communal living. As part of the healing program, the women will gather daily for a time of reflection, community and prayer.

 Woman entering the program are not required to make a statement of faith. They will be required to agree to participate in Haven House program activities, and contribute from their earnings towards expenses. Frequently the women won't have significant earnings, at least at the beginning of their stay, and the home will primarily be financed by charitable contributions, grants, and housing subsidies.
