SEAFOM wishes to create in Juneau, Alaska an authentic AMI Montessori program from infancy through adolescence, on one site or campus, fully funded, autonomous within the public school system, and available to all families that choose Montessori education for their children. Recognizing that such a vision takes many dedicated individuals and resources to fully realize, SEAFOM will work to grow incrementally toward this vision.
Objectives:
- Increase the number of Juneau's Montessori classrooms, toddler through adolescent, in order to accommodate the growing demand.
- Bring all Juneau Montessori classrooms, toddler through adolescent, into one building or onto one campus in order to form a cohesive Montessori community.
- Bring the entire Montessori community, toddler through adolescent, into the public school system in order to make Montessori K-8 education available free of charge to everyone who seeks it.
Strategies:
- Mount a public relations campaign to educate the public, the School District, the School Board, and the host school communities about Montessori education and philosophy.
- Work with the School District to improve our relationship with the host school communities, to correct misconceptions about Montessori, and to improve/de-mystify our demographics and our admission process.
- Develop a plan for increasing our autonomy within the School District.
- Continue to research and think creatively about possible future configurations of Montessori classrooms.
- Continue to meet with the Juneau Community Charter School to determine the feasibility of joining under their charter in order to strengthen both programs.
- Identify potential classroom locations - for expansions and to bring the preschool through the adolescent programs into closer proximity.
- Continue to develop grant-writing capabilities: compile all necessary documents to apply for funds, identify potential funders, develop relationships with funders, hire a SEAFOM administrator, and develop networking.
- Begin to develop a strategy to secure funding for our own building by 2008.
- Invite new families into the elementary Montessori program and provide information and outreach to JMS to help families make the choice to continue in elementary Montessori after a successful pre-school experience.
- Expand the toddler/primary program - secure two additional classrooms for JMS. Work toward bringing the Kindergartners into the School District.
- Expand the elementary program - add an upper elementary classroom.
- Expand the adolescent program - secure funding for the occupations segment and the land segment. Secure District funding for the AMP in time for the 2005/2006 school year.
