We met Tuesday February 9. Present were .... This summary is from Larry's notes.

Agenda:

  • Non-profit status progress
  • Forest Service property disposal

Mary Fitterer and I (and my wife Alison) viewed the Forest Service property today.

The Juneau Ranger District Office parcel 1, consisting of two buildings at 8461 Old Dairy Road, certainly has potential for our purposes. But it will be sold in an online auction that is already in progress... and the auction stops when there has been no bidding for a period of time. The minimum bid amount is $150,000, and, payment in full is required within 45 days after acceptance of the winning bid. (There are some additional terms requiring deposits and etc., this is just a summary.)

    Mary adds:
I would add to Larry's email that a lot of consideration would need to be put in a decision as to if this would be an appropriate site for the facility we have in mind. It is commercial property surrounded by other commercial agencies. One would probably want to know what the other parcel next to the bunk houses would be used for.

Both buildings would need a tremendous amount of updating and remodeling.

For the curious, the bidding can be observed at:

Second Chance Act grants for adult and juvenile reentry demonstration projects (Section 101)

I am involved with a Juneau group forming a non-profit (Haven House Juneau) dedicated to helping women with reentry issues on release from prison. I just learned about a federal grant solicitation for reentry demonstration projects under the Second Chance Act Section 101. (See http://nationalreentryresourcecenter.org/announcements/solicitation-for-second-chance-act-grants-to-state-and-local-governments-released-today)

I can see that under Section 101 the grant application must come from a state or local government or federally recognized tribe... and the grant application deadline is March 4, 2010. I understand that this is a very short timeframe for developing a credible grant application, but, I thought I would ask if there was any interest in collaboration on an application.

As noted, the grant application would have to be submitted by a state, local government, or federally recognized tribe, but, grant seekers are advised to maximize collaboration, and our organization, Haven House Juneau, has contacts with churches, and we have given serious thought to issues and potential solutions, and... while we don't have a lot of resources, we also don't have much inertia and what assistance we can provide could be mobilized quickly.

If you think that there is any chance of responding quickly enough to meet the March 4, 2010 deadline, would you consider forwarding this to someone in your state/local/tribal government who might wish to participate in a collaborative grant application? Haven House Juneau is a new organization and the only contribution we can make is through engaged volunteers, but, we are interested in helping if we can.

Unless we hear otherwise, Haven House Juneau will focus on a grant application under Second Chance Act mentoring grants to nonprofit organizations (Section 211), for which we are qualified to apply, although we will of course still seek to maximize collaboration.

  • Starting a reentry initiative

I propose we begin following the advice published by the National Reentry Resource Center Starting a Reentry Initiative and use that advice to guide further development of our business plan

  • Contact with Liz Hogan of Spokane's Transitions for Women
  • The next meeting is scheduled for the first Tuesday in March (3/2/2010.)
